Just an Observation
Myanmar was hit by a cyclone, which is compatible to the devastation caused by a hurricane. There was massive devastation. Lots of people have died. Even more are without shelter, food and medical attention. Parts of the country are STILL under water. The international community has reached out with several countries offering aid. But the government officials in Myanmar have been slow to respond and cautious in whom they let give aid and who they let in the country.
Am I the only one who thinks this story sounds familiar? Hurricane Katrina maybe? I know there are some obvious differences between the US and Myanmar. Myanmar’s infrastructure has given way to larger detestation because most of the citizens there live in homes a shaky foundation. And of course they don’t have the resources and money of the US. I know there are many more differences as well but the story rings familiar. It’s a sad comparison.
Now think back to Katrina. After if the storm hit the residents need help. They were without shelter, food, and medical attention. Parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, but specifically New Orleans were still under water. The international community reached out with several countries offering aid. But the government officials in the US were slow to respond and picky about whom they let help. (ie Cuba & Venezuela being the first countries to offer and getting the cold shoulder) Not to mention aid that was wasted due to lack of leadership. But one of the first people to pressure Myanmar to let the international community in to help was Laura Bush.
