Repost: The Savoy Ballroom

So why we Stompin at the Savoy

Well those that know me know I like to go out and have a good time… And the Savoy was a club back in the times of the Harlem Renaissance. It was one of the few racially integrated clubs of its time. If I could have lived during any time in history, just to experience the culture, the Harlem Renaissance would have been it. It was an era of black enlightenment, creativity and self examination. It was the explosion of literature, art, poetry, music and intellectuals. I could see myself racing to check out what philosophers Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Dubois were speaking on. Checking out the words of writers like Zora Neal Huston, Claude McKay, & Langston Hughes. Heading over to the Apollo for amateur night to check out Billie Holiday and experience my first crush. And you know I had to run over to the Savoy Ballroom because the battle of the bands was going to be jump off.

In case you were wondering, that is indeed when the term was coined. For all the high schools and colleges having their battles these days, at the Savoy is where it started. They would square off in a packed house. I’m talking standing room only. At the end of the first set they would trade music. At the end, the crowd would vote for their favorite.

When the Savoy was not packed from the battles between Count Basie & Chick Webb’s Orchestras it was one of the most popular clubs in NYC. And please believe you better come dressed to impress. No I mean REALLY dressed to impress. None of that jeans and a polo shirt type garbage. Matter a fact if you came with jeans on to the club back then folks probably would have looked at you funny because who comes to the club in their work clothes. Jeans were not casual wear until the 50’s. And depending on your generation maybe you do the dougie, the superman, the wop, the mash potato, or the twist. Well imagine coming home from the club after a night of swing dancing.

I already know some of you would be calling your bosses the next morning …The Savoy was such a good time that Benny Goodman & co. immortalized it in song. “Stompin’ at the Savoy” check it out…

Benny Goodman – Stompin’ at the Savoy

OK I know some of you may be thinking it sounds a lil like the music soundtrack to a Tom & Jerry Cartoon. I assure you its not. But with that being said I’d like to introduce you all to something else that is an old concept. The Remix … Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong remade the song. Don’t worry this remake is definitely one of the good ones.

Artist Profile: Caroyln Malachi

If I started with a base of Jazz , then added in Neo Soul, Pop & Spoken Word and presented it with smooth vocals Carolyn Malachi would be the result. Ms Malachi is fresh off a trip to the Grammy’s, nominated for her single “Orion” from her 2010 release of EP “Lions, Fires & Squares”. This nomination was the result of alot of networking and a beautiful song. According to the Washington Post, “the singer began networking with the 400 voting members of the Washington chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which also includes Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.”. She also attended many mixers where she was able to put her single in front of Grammy voters. The networking paid off and she was even invited to the exclusive Clive Davis pre-Grammy soiree.

Carolyn Malachi is another blossoming talent from the Washington, DC area and also the great-granddaughter of late Washington jazz musician John Malachi. Her desire in music did not spark until 2005 when she took a sound design class, her junior year at Shepherd University. Her inspiration flourish when some friends encouraged her to sing at a local fair. This led to the release of two albums; Revenge of the Smart Chicks & Revenge of the Smart Chicks II. The second album influenced Carolyn to found Smart Chicks Inc. which  ”aims to develop visibility and leadership opportunities for women in the arts.” The blog for Smart Chicks Inc is pretty nice as well and has been added to the blog roll.

I once had the opportunity to meet Carolyn Malachi and see her perform live. In 2008, I was looking for ways to expand and get the word out about my t-shirt business (Consciously A-Wear to be relaunch later this year). A friend of mine who runs Make it Happen consulting introduced me to Carolyn. I stayed to watch her perform and have been a fan ever since.

Check her out at

I also have her in the new playlist rotation

Just Around The Corner – 2/14

Happy Monday. A new week, new events. A new playlist will be updated tomorrow. One of the new events I’m really excited about attending will be Esperanza Spalding’s show on March 4th. I caught her big win yesterday at the Grammy’s and could not be more excited. Only a hand full of folks on my facebook feed even knew who she was and this morning everyone is asking “Who is Esperanza Spalding ” ?   I will be profiling another grammy nominated artist whom folks know little about, Caroyln Malachi. So next year if she gets another nomination, you will not be in the dark about this great artist.

The Box Friday’s: Da Honeys

Happy Friday. Do I ever have a true Jukebox video for you today. It even has the scroll across the bottom with the video listings as the video plays. Back in the day Another Bad Creation (ABC) took a lot of heat from rival groups like Kriss Kross, The Famlee, Da Youngstas among others. But there was also a girl group called “The Honeys” who made a rebuttal to ABC’s song ”Iesha”.  I was starting to think I would never find this video but last night I got lucky. I’m so hyped that I found this video, I’m posting it even though it’s missing the first verse.
I could not find ANY current information about the group. They never put out a full album but its looks like they had two promo cassettes, the second cassette was five songs which included the title track called “Chil Lee Mak”, a dis on Kriss Kross. Now if someone finds that video I’m really going to be shocked. I found a site where you could buy three songs from the Honeys, including the one from the video below “How Low”.

Remember When: Funhouse

I was just surfing around youtube and ran across one of my favorite shows growing up as a kid. Before Double Dare there was Fun House. I know I wasn’t the only one watching this show on saturday mornings wishing that I could get on this show to win some British Knights and slide down that big slide. Skip to about the 4 minute mark where they describe all the awesome prizes they can win before they take on the fun house.
